Double Batchim

A double batchim is two different consonants sharing the final position — there are 11 in total. You never pronounce both; a rule decides which single sound survives.

  • 읽다 (to read) is pronounced [iktta], but in forms like 읽기 it becomes [ilkki].

Before a Vowel, Both Survive

Before a vowel, both consonants survive — the first stays, and the second carries over to the next syllable.
